Thump In The Road
The sparrow flew
right
into the path
of my speeding car,
me distracted,
I braked,
but not in time…
Thump
goes my heart,
flutters in my rearview mirror
confirm the sound
I don’t want to hear,
echoing…
Tiny life
snuffed,
forgotten,
tumbled by the road side,
discarded,
left broken,
crushed
by carelessness,
by timing
gone all wrong…
No more dipping
and swaying on currents
of air,
on spring breezes,
or sunrise trills of fluid joy…
Just the empty space
where once my heart flew,
a memory
dancing
releasing,
coming to rest
in the dust,
becoming dust,
falling into night,
a single star
to light the darkness
and the heaviness of my soul…
